History
Gillett Community Center & Square
In 2011, the Gillett Public Library (GPL) began planning for an expansion project that would include a much-needed second meeting room space as well as provide additional seating for WiFi/studying/socializing. The Friends of the GPL paid for an architectural plan that would have added approximately 2,000 sq. ft. to the back of the existing building.
In the fall of 2013, BMO Harris announced that they would be closing their branch here in Gillett, and our library changed their focus from remodeling their existing structure to re-configuring the bank building to meet community needs. The GPL was able to purchase the bank using only donated funds (no taxpayer money was used) in May, 2014.

The GPL was able to purchase the bank using only donated funds (no taxpayer money was used) in May, 2014.
- PHASE ONE involved the purchase of the former bank building and the renovations to convert it into a Community Center. This purchase and the renovations were made possible thanks to the generosity of many individuals and organizations. This phase was completed in May, 2015.
- PHASE TWO converted the library's former meeting room space into library space, adding additional shelving for library collections. Additional seating areas were added for those who access our WiFi, read, study, and socialize at our library. On the library side, the Circulation Desk and public computer stations flip-flopped, allowing for more space for computer users. And the carpeting was replaced on the library side with porcelain tile in high-traffic areas and carpet tiles in low-traffic areas. This Phase made possible thanks to the Ebenreiter family who funded this project. This phase was completed in April, 2016.
- PHASE THREE involved the creation of the new COMMUNITY SQUARE space adjacent to the library.
The former parking lot was repaved, resurfaced, and regraded to create seating areas and a public space to gather. This Phase was made possible thanks to the Ebenreiter family who funded this project. This phase was completed in August, 2016.
Policies
INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY
It shall be the policy of the Gillett Public Library to be closed when the Gillett School District closes for the day or part of the day due to inclement weather.
However, the librarian (director) has the authority to make decisions to open or keep the library open on such days after taking into consideration the safety of the library staff and patrons.

RESPONSIBILITIES
SELECTION POLICY
The ultimate responsibility for selection of library materials rests with the Library Director who operates within a framework of the policies determined by the Library Board. This responsibility maybe shared with other members of the library staff. However, the Director must be available to answer to the Library Board and the general public for actual selections made.
The Director has the final authority to reject or select any item.
CRITERIA FOR SELECTION
The main points considered in the selection of materials are:
a. Existing library holdings
b. Suitability of material for community
c. Individual merit of each item
d. Budget
e. Popular appeal/demand
Reviews are the major source of information about new material. The major source of reviews is “Booklist.” The lack of a review or an unfavorable review shall not be the sole reason for rejection of a title which is in demand. Consideration is, therefore, given to the requests of library patrons and the books discussed on public media. Materials are judged on the basis of the work as a whole, not on a part taken out of context.
WEEDING
An up-to-date, attractive, and useful collection is maintained through a continual discarding and replacing process. Replacement of worn volume is dependent on current demand, usefulness, more recent acquisitions, and availability of newer editions. Weeding is the responsibility of the Library Director.
GIFTS AND DONATIONS
The library accept gifts of books and other materials with the understanding that they will be added to the collection only if needed. If they are not needed because of duplication, condition, or dated information, the Director can dispose of them as he/she sees fit. The same criteria of selection which is applied to purchase materials is applied to gifts. Memorial gifts of books or money are also accepted with suitable bookplates placed in the book. Specific memorial books will be ordered by the Library on request of the patron. Book selection will be made by the Director if no specific book is wanted. We encourage and appreciate gifts and donations.
PROBLEM AREAS
We recognize that some materials are controversial and that any given item may offend some patrons. Selection of materials will not be made on the basis of anticipated approval or disapproval, but solely on the basis of the principles stayed in this policy.
Responsibility for the reading materials of children rests with their parents or legal guardians. Selection of Library materials will not be inhibited by the possibility that materials may come into the possession of children.
Library materials will not be marked or identified to show approval or disapproval of their contents, and no library material will be sequestered except to protect it from injury or theft.
CHALLENGED MATERIALS
Although materials are carefully selected, there can arise difference of opinion regarding suitable materials. Patrons requesting that material be withdrawn from or restricted within the collection may compete a challenged material form which is available in the library. The inquiry will be placed on the agenda of the next regular meeting of the Library Board of Trustees.
